I'm thinking of buying some white sapote varieties such as Pike, Ortega and Vista for my garden in the hills on the outskirts of Melbourne, but I'd like to pick two varieties that grow the best for our region. I've heard ortega is a good pollinator for pike. suggestions or advice?

Hi moadeep, my white sapotes are not fruiting yet,so I will quote Louis Glowinski who says he has an Ortego and a Vista which produced beautiful fruit after his Ortego flowered. He lives in Melb. Hope that helps.

Thanks Jantina. I ended up getting 2 ortega's, 2 pikes and vista. The pikes already have fruit on them, which is really cool. The ortega's are the youngest, so they'll flower in a few years but my vista is looking a little sickly.. yellow leaves!

Hey moadeep, where did you end up sourcing your trees? I haven't ever seen Pike for sale.

Hey phil,
I got the pikes from Perry's in SA. They were mature tree's (from 1 1/2 to 2 years of age) and are about 1 meter tall bearing nice green fruit. Not sure if chris has any more left. He had one Vista and I got that too (bit bigger than the pikes but no fruit, same age) but the vista doesn't look too healthy at the moment. Its leaves are yellowish. Chris tells me thats either from too much or too little fertilizer this year so I'm kinda terrified of doing anything, I'll wait and see if the tree improves (any advice on that one??).
Got 2 ortega's as well. These are young plants and Perry's has plenty of them apparently. The plan is to use the ortega's to cross pollinate the pikes, vista and the reinecke commercial (that I got at local nursery) so I can get some bumper crops! Well, thats the plan, lets see how it works out.
I based my selections on readings and suggestions (like this thread) on the internet. Basic word was Ortega's are great pollinators for Pikes and Vista's. Pike are meant to be good in victoria as well http://www.au.gardenweb.com/forums/load/cornucop/msg0602313010767.html) So that's what I got.
I will post pics of the tree's tomorrow. Maybe people can help me figure out whats wrong with my vista!
