I have heard of bananas with pink flesh instead of yellow. Anyone know if they are grown in Australia?

Violet_Cactus, you are probably thinking of one of the red skinned bananas such as the jamacan red. As far as I know the closest available in Australia is the Red Dacca which is said to have an orange to pink colored flesh.

I got mine from bunnings. The picture on the right is my red dacca after a frosty winter. It has now bounced back after a slow start and is about 1.2m (I planted it Jan 2009).
The ones sold at bunnings are "Cool Bananas" brand...

I should probably also point out that I'm not convinced that my red dacca is actually a red dacca (even though it was labeled as such). I expected to see a lot more red on the stem and leaves, but there is very little.

I have seen large stands of dwarf red dacca bananas , and the foliage was all green . Was just given 2 fruits from them . Flesh is slightly darker than normal . Flavour is superb , and I have been told that it was hard to sell the fruit many years ago , and most fruit was dried .
Always wondered why the dried bananas of my youth tasted so NICE . I have seen a banana with red foliage though , will ask my DPI contacts about this .

Thanks Trikus, I was expecting more red on the pseudostem but there is almost no red on any part of the plant. The only picture I have seen was of a young plant and the pseudostem was a pinkish color.

Here's some pic's of my Dwarf red Dacccas. They have'nt been in the ground too long, about 6 months. They're not shaping up to be all that dwarf. The leaves are huuuge.
BTW, these bananas are under the Cool Bananas banner as well.

The tall banana plant in the middle of this pic is a pink ornamental. The fruits are small but bright pink. Dont know if they are edible.
The short banana plant in the background is a true dwarf Cavendish. They grow to a maximum of 2m high and throw very large bunches.

John Mc,
Pink ornamental banana (M.velutina) ?
pink, velvet, self peeling banana.
the fruits are edible, but not really worth it as they're more seed than pulp.
pretty plants and fruit though.
They'll grow easily from seed too.
My 'Dwarf cavs.' are going great here, so is the 'Super Dwarf Cav.'
John I, it sounds as if labels have been mixed up somewhere.
still, I think wait until it fruits.

How big does your super dwarf get? I didn't think they were available in Australia?

superdwarf in supposed to fruit at about a metre high.
it's been in the ground about 4 months.
Atm the plant is about 50cm to leaf axil and about a metre overall.
I got it in Melbourne at a nursery (Denises tropical Gardens Nursery- Carrum Downs) that was closing down in July 2009.
Dwarf Cavs. I put in as small suckers at about the same time are metre tall at leaf axil and tip of new leaf 2 metres.
Happy plants! :-)

Speedy, I called Denises Tropical Gardens around the time that you got your super dwarf and they couldn't tell me what type of banana it was as they had never had them fruit. I didn't bother with them because I figured they were just an ornamental. I hope I was wrong (wouldn't be the first time). Was yours labeled as cavendish?

It was labelled 'Super Dwarf' and it appears different to my Dwarf Cavs. so I'll just have to let you know when it fruits.
it's in a NE facing suntrap and being small, I can cover it on frosty nights.
although we have higher and lower temps than Melb. we get more total heat throughout the year,
so it may just have that little bit better chance here than where it came from.
I've seen what I'm pretty sure is one in Mullumbimby,
it's been there for years, next to a driveway in someones yard.

After searching through pictures on the web, and a process of elimination, I've come to the conclusion that my red dacca is actually a dwarf cavendish... now I'm going to have to find a true red dacca.

Trikus, my "red dacca" doesn't have a red petiole like John Mc's. I'm so convinced that mine isn't a red dacca that I've renamed it in My Edibles page.

Hey Nick,
Don't like your chances mate, wrong time of the year. I'd wait till August/September when all the new stock arrives and go for it then. There's a lot of nurseries around Sydney, especially the northern areas around Dural, Galston.
Hargreaves and Swanes are two really big nurseries you could make enquiries.

They should be easy to get , it has been in cultivation in Aus. for many years .
Regarded as a weed and maybe illegal to grow here in Qld. I have eaten the fruit and found it barely worth the effort.

Hi I've come across info from the US about dehydrating red bananas usually from South America and using the powder as a sweetener which is supposed to be delicious. Any idea if you can buy these in Australia (East coast) and where? Jane

Hi Jane,
Mine will be in fruit again I'd say mid summer. They're not that sweet and full of hard seeds. They do fruit much quicker than the mainstreem bananas, but you only get half dozen in a bunch at best.
There is a nursery on the Central Coast Called Impact Plants at Kincumber if you wanted to make the treck and buy one already growing. I'd ring them first to see if they still stocked them.
