A 40cm pot is a good size for the first couple of years and then get gradually bigger. You need to use premium potting mix (not garden soil) and change it every 2-3 years.

Oups, just noticed you said in litres. That would probably be about 27l??? Pots tend to be sold in cm sizes, and bags in litres.

Ohhhhh yer, and the last thing. Totally wrong time of year for apples. You want to wait for bare root trees in winter. Citrus, well it would be better to wait until after summer.

thank you so much i have 3 apples in pots and my granny smith and pink lady are fine and healthy but my red delicious is losing its leave and its been like this for the last 2 months it hasnt set a leaf yet

So it has no leaves left? The most common problem with trees grown in containers is that they are not watered enough. It doesn't sound too promising if it hasn't got any leaves back by now.
