Please can someone tell me where I can order some "JUTE POTATO BAGS" used or other wise, on the net. I like using them around the garden for plants but can't find anyone selling them apart from one huge bulk seller with a huge price I can't afford. I'm a pensioner. Please if anyone knows..........

are they the same as GroBags? Made of shadecloth, good as an alternative to plastic pots, can be sunk into the ground to dwarf the tree

No, jute is a natural biodegradable fibre. The GroBags in the ground to dwarf plants sounds interesting, do you have any experience doing this yourself and what were your results. Thanks Jantina

Just look for some old coir(brown coconut fibre)carpet underfelt, that someone has thrown out.
Or use the permaculture method of sheet mulching with wet newspaper and some mulch or grass clippings.
Or find some old woollen carpet/underfelt.
Yeah ,they used to use wool for a carpet underfelt, and now people are throwing it into the rubbish.
Anyone want some?
It comes in pink and green.
Ceiling insulation,shoe inner soles,etc.

Hi,
Most carpet stores have to pay to get rid of the carpet and underlay when they install new carpet.
Just ring and ask if they have any in and they will give it to you for free. Tell them you are after the under felt in the coir or hair felt which is also all natural. They usually have it rolled but it can easily be folded and fitted into a boot.
Otherwise try a greengrocer as some would still get their potatoes in sacks.
Cheers

The old 50kg potato sacks are becoming extinct, our potatoes came in them for our fish and chip shop but our supplier has now switched to 20kg bags due to workplace regulations.
I know he was selling the 50kg bags for $1 each but I think they are now getting very hard to come by.

Bunnings sells hessian bags - I was looking for weedmats and saw some in plastic bags for about $1.99 each, individually packaged. Worth a look.

Thanks all you guys for your imput. The Bunnings ones sound like more what I want. I use them as surrounds for young trees/seedlings that I put in and they protect them for the first couple of years from wind and frost better than the plastic type ones that animal feed comes in, and cheaper than special tree surrounds. I'll check Bunnings out next time we are near one.. Here in Kingaroy we don't have a Bunnings only a Mitre 10 and they charge like gold for everything. Thanks for that Phil. The help one gets on this site and forum is fantastic, specially for an old fogie like me.. smile.

Be careful of antique woollen carpet and underlay, some was soaked in dieldrin to stop moths, this is a very nasty pesticide, which is now banned.
I use old cotton clothing and bed linen rags they are biodegrade. They are easy to get from the op shop, just ask for the rags. They do look a bit messy maybe colour co-ordinate or cover with lawn clippings. I am trying to get my mate with a lawn mowing business to drop me around another load.
Lawn mowing businesses often are more than happy to drop off their lawn clippings.

Have to agree with amanda and allybanana, furthermore many old carpets and underlay apparently have high levels of lead that has been tracked in on peoples shoes over the years. May be ok on ornamental gardens but I wouldn't put it anywhere near my edibles. A good resource gone bad.

I spent most of my teenage mornings on the beach surfing before school, every morning I would make a fire after I was finished to reheat myself from the 11c water, throw a can of SPC beans on the fire and eat them out of the can for breakfast. The thing is the fire would get really hot and make a layer of carbon inside the can.
Anyway:P once I read that cans in Australia were still put together with lead until a date after I stoped surfing, when I realised the fires were so hot they would have melted all the lead in the can, I wrote to SPC to ask for the date they stopped building them with lead. I got no reply so I guess that means my bones are well are truly lead coated from the few hundred cans I would have cooked :p.
The good news is that it seems that the body can absorb lead into the bones and save itself from too many problems :)?
My father was also talking toa some guy that was doing research on the health effects of those new cans with the epoxy? white liner inside them and my dad said, so no good to cook these on the fire then :). My dad said the bloke almost fell over on the spot with the revelation that this could happen, then onces he regained himself said oooh, no I wouldn't do that!. So maybe you are better with a lead can than melted resins :p I've thought since then that perhaps there should be a warning on cans not to cook them on the fire in the can but that would perhaps open a can of worms so to speak about the whole lead thing so maybe nothing spoken has been decided to be the best policy :)

If you want this for growing potatoes, why don't you take some old chicken wire (tip) and whack in four starposts and do it like that? There's more space and you grow more potatoes. Otherwise get your grandchildren to dig a trench and do it traditionally.
Apparently cilantro helps to get the lead out of you (it will then end up in the water supply but never mind) at least it's easy to grow and if it doesn't help it's still yummy.
