Question about Mulberry tree grafting (forum)

Has anyone tried grafting on mulberry tree? Any tips?
I have dwarf black mulberry tree in ground for more than a year. Tree is currently loaded with fruits and lots of new leaves.. I also have Dwarf Red Shahtoot tree in a pot but it is growing very weird since I bought it. It has only one main branch - 1 ft vertical (this vertical section holds graft) and then same branch has grown 5 ft horizontally. So I'm going to cut this whole horizontal section and hope that new branches will emerge out above graft point. Instead of throwing this pruned branch, I'm thinking to graft it on dwarf black mulberry tree. Red shahtoot has just started putting on new growth (on horizontal section I mentioned above), I can see couple fruits popping out of new growth buds. So it is no more dormant. I have read scion has to be dormant for successful grafting. Will it be worth the efforts if it is the case?

Hi Db,
The Red Shahtoot you have should be grafted onto black. Check the label. So no compatability problems. Have your shahtoot buds burst yet? Or is it just still hanging onto last seasons leaves? Check for unopened buds - if you have buds take off the full leaves and it should be alright to graft with if you do so quickly. My Shahtoot is still 'dormant' but is holding leaves from last season.

Thanks BJ for quick reply. New buds on my Red Shahtoot are almost ready to burst now (but they are growing very slowly), there are only 4-5 buds (around 1-1.5cm long now) though on this branch. One big bud has opened and I can see one fruit trying to pop out, that's why I said its no more dormant. Leaves from last season are still there.
This will be my first try of grafting, I'm also going to graft Mango tree. Is it ok to use just glad-wrap? or grafting tape and wax tape is must to hold the graft?
