In the UK, Europe and the USA people are growing these amazing red walnuts.
Anyone know if you can get these trees in Australia?

Just did a quick search and found that the red walnut is from a patented variety is called 'Robert Livermore'
the patent was granted in around 2001
so may not be in Australia at this time.
But you can never be sure of these things.
It's bred from 'Chandler', which is available, and 'Purpurea'.
Looks tasty...

Thanks Speedy! I hadn't realised it was a proprietary name. It looks amazing - hope it reaches our shores.

They do look good! I have never seen a walnut tree in real life. Would they need conditions similar to an Oak tree or such? Where do walnuts grow in Aust?

Hi Amanda,
Walnuts grow ok here in semi-arid Mediteranean cimate (with irrigation).
There are some small commercial plantations close by.
They may grow ok for you there, probably better south of Perth though.
Worth a try.
I dont know how much or if the need chilling for flower initiation.
There are also Andean walnut(Juglans neotropica) a quick growing tree from Ecuador,
but the nuts IME not much better than Black walnut as far as nuts go.

Ta Speedy - I might wait till we head south! I am looking forward to trying nut trees - I don't have any here as I thought the galahs etc would eat them all.

Geraldton id think would be far far too hot
Manjimup is more walnut country
i planted some inland of bunbury but even there they scorched in the 40+ summers
good drainage, same chilling as for peaches through apples, deep soils, and temps that dont often go over 35C
usually they do better at altitude in australia because of the lower temps.
Good plantings down in tassie in the derwent valley

no problem. you can have them sent over, so long as you pay the methyl bromide treatmnet cost
that does have bad effcts on some seeds, not sure about walnuts
sounds worth it though
the selection of walnut genetics here is pretty awful
just a few varieties, and none with much resistance to diseases

BTW has anyome here had success germinating store bought walnuts?
ive gotten all in shell store nuts to germinate except Hazel, Brasil and walnuts.
It would be a cheap way to get walnuts if you wanted to plant a grove of them for your own nuts and one day timber
