Rocket hybrid? (forum)

I was wondering about my "rocket" plant that has grown 2yrs in a row now...is it likely to be a stable hybrid at this stage?
I think it has maybe crossed with the wild turnip or such.
The white page is A4 and a normal rocket leaf included. I like these big ones as they are milder/not so hot.

G'day amanda,
Has the 'big leaf' type ever seeded?
If it has, try planting those seeds, and see what happens :-)
You may have a new type of rocket, call it 'Amanda Rocket'. Or even, 'Rock-It Amanda' :-)

yes Brendan - it's flowering now actually!.....I was quite excited about it - but thought maybe rocket commonly crossed. It will be fun trying anyway!
I can't seem to grow anything other than super-hot rocket here normally.

LOL! U are right CCS - but nah - they impervious to anything but goats... and no way will I let one of them loose in my garden!!
The tops dry out and snap off - then they become "tumble weed" - each top carries 1000's of seeds. They blow everywhere - they pile up against my fence (from outside) until they come pouring over the top. Bloody shocking stuff. I have given up the struggle - will get the brush cutter onto them as soon as I feel a grumpy mood coming on ;-)

Hi amanda,
That 'large leaf rocket' wouldn't be Mustard Lettuce hey? I used to grow mustard lettuce, now it's gone a bit feral:-(
Only problem, my mustard lettuce is about 4 times hotter than rocket!

Hey Brendan - I grew a red mustard plant just recently - and yea - it was like eating pure wasabi! Great for clearing the sinuses he he.
It could have crossed with mustard though - I threw a whole heap yellow mustard seeds and buckwheat seeds around a couple of years back.

amanda, you said you grew it 'just recently'. This year? You would only see results of cross pollination if you saved the red mustard seed and grew from that. The first season wouldn't be affected.
Mustard is pretty damn hot raw, but loses the heat when cooked.

Hi amanda,
Here's a pic of my self-sown/feral mustard lettuce grown in the lawn. You can see it looks awfully like that leaf of yours, but boy it is HOT!
You can see where I pinched a tiny bit to taste (top right), won't be doing that again:-)

Hey Brendan - here's my plant and it's flower....does yours end up like this? It's about a meter tall.
Sorry Julie - it was the yellow mustard seeds I threw around 2 yrs back that I was thinking of - but the wild turnip is everywhere also...it's in the same genus as canola.

Yes amanda,
My feral mustard lettuce looks the same, but without that reddish colour.
Yep, I've had some grow ~ 1.2m tall, and after flowering, they get a 'seed bean' ~ 30 to 40mm long, I'm fairly sure that is what they make Mustard Seed Oil out of.
Btw, cold pressed Mustard Seed Oil is as good as if not better than E.V. Olive oil :-) It's perfect for cooking fish.

G'day amanda,
You never know, it might be something else.
I meant to say they get a LOT of seed beans, so if your doesn't, it could be a different plant.
btw, nearly all the seeds sprout too:-(
