Dear ALex with a capital L,
there are many, many, people in Greater Melbourne growing A. alnifolia that have been fruiting over the last couple of months. You will find more information about the growers and the fruits on the Heritage fruits fb page.

I am growing a number of Amelanchier varieties in Melbourne. I am not so keen on the fruit of A. alnifolia and prefer the berries of A. lamarckii and A. asiatica, but that is only my own personal preference for taste.

Picture shows lamarckii berries about 1 month ago, they will turn deep purple black when fully ripe. Hope this helps with your investigations.

Hi Linton,
I haven't decided for sure which fruit I am going to grow commercially but am considering a alnifolia due to them being commercially grown in Canada. I am going to travel to Canada in June july. But in the mean time I really would like to try the fruit first if anyone has any ripe any time soon I would be very appreciative to try some.

Dear Nixon, the season is over for me as all the fruit finished a couple of weeks ago and there are none left on any of my trees. I think that Europe is miles ahead of Canada in breeding superior cultivars of Amelanchiers. They literally have dozens of new varieties now in Europe.

There are some dwarf forms like Blue Moon, A spicata, which I tried to grow but they died, and there's the dwarf form of A. pumila in Europe with large fruit. Most of the compact forms only grow to about 2 metres with short runners so they are easier to harvest and maintain.

Others worth looking for might be A. ovalis cv. Edelweiss, some Alinfolia cultivars like Thiessen, Martin, Blue Ray, and another dwarf one called 'Obelisk' but it has PBR. La Paloma is a beautiful small specimen tree but don't know about the fruit. Good luck with your project and hope it will be successful for you!
