i've successfully grown a white sapote and now a young black sapote, but we only ever got 1 (!!!) fruit on the white sapote.
can anyone tell me which sapotes can cross-breed and which are self-pollinating?
cheers

Hi,In response to Steve my understanding is that the white sapote needs a pollinator the literature I read said Lemon Gold was the one of choice I have 4 different varieties in my greenhouse as to the Black Sapote this is actually a member of the Persimmon family sometimes listed as a black persimmon its the only one coming from south america when you see a fruit is is unmistakenly like a persimmon its requirments are unknown to me in the listings of this site they mention polllinator beneficial, regards Gary

I have many very good persimmons...fruiting very well and white sapote....is it possible that the persimmons will pollinate the sapote...the sapote is very happy and now pretty big so it may fruit at any time now...when I bought it there was no mention on the tag or by the seller that it required another tree.Any thoughts?

Steve it sounds as though your white sapote needs another variety with it to cross pollinate. Self pollinating varieties are Lemon Gold, Chris, Reinecke Commercial, and the Golden Globe is partially self pollinating.
