Shadehouse (forum)

I think we will need a shade house to propagate plants, 2x2 meters would be enough.
Can anyone recommend a brand which is sturdy enough and does not fly away in the first storm? Or is it worthwhile building the thing ourselves? (My husband has a new Bosch drill and it increased his output by 400%, boys need their toys).

Hi Ringel

I purchased one around six months ago off of ebay. It is a lean-to greenhouse but i cover it with cloth to essentially turn it into a shadehouse in summer. There are a bunch of vendors selling the same brand of Chinese made greenhouses. The attraction is they are much cheaper than what you would find elsewhere, but you probably sacrifice a little on quality. That said mine is very sturdy and besides being fiddly during the construction phase I'm happy with the purchase.

2m x 2m might be enough for now but six months down the road and you will want to be extending it. If you're hubby is half handy he could knock one up out of 70mm x 38mm treated pine on a lazy sunday arvo.
I started with a 3m x 3m but it turned out to be too small really quickly. I'm now planning to build a 6m x 12m x 3.5m high poly tunnel after I get my current projects out of the way. I am even future proofing that one by excavating another plot the same size next to it.

I have to agree with John here, the bigger greenhouse the better. Mine is small (3.6m2) due to size of my yard, but i have it so full that i can only squeeze myself just in. Greenhouses are great not just for propagating but also storing plants during the hot and/or cold months.

I have an old Hills hoist which was a giveaway. I intend to cover it with a durable plastic and turn it into a greenhouse.

Cheap way to do it!

You think it is worthwhile building one yourself, even if you count the material.
It might be sturdier than the Chinese version.
Or we make a pergola anyway and we integrate it into it.

Hey Ringel, I bought mine from Bunnings & it had shelves in it, but is now discontinued I am told, but if you go into dealsdirect.com.au & hit "outdoors" you will find in page 4 a 3.5 metre greenhouse for $99.50. No shelves but quite sturdy.
The secret is to purchase & use a heap of good sized tent pegs to secure frame to ground & preferably place greenhouse against a sturdy fence if poss. & tie to it as well.
