Silverbeet - How tall? (forum)

Gus starts with ...
My silverbeet has been wonderful and very colourful.

It's the first vegies I've ever planted since primary school. It's been fun and rewarding watching them thrive and eat the produce.

They are currently going to seed and are over 2 m tall.

The tallest in the photos is over 240cm. and they're still growing, they haven't flowered yet.

So what size has yours grown too before?

Are you eating it?
Mine get harvested every day and never grow more than 2 feet.
After a month or so of harvesting I pull them out and have new plants already planted and ready to harvest.
I find an old overgrown beet gets a little bitter.

The older leaves at the base of the silver beet in the photo are still ok to eat.

The younger leaves that have come after going to seed are bitter. Still edible I suppose if cooked.

They are every much like trees.

Hi Kerri,

A couple of thoughts, chard and silver beet are certainly more of a winter crop in Perth. So the heat alone may be making them bolt.
Did you grow them from seed or buy seedlings ?
Some seedling at Bunnings etc can be weeks old, so the plant has gone through its life cycle in the little pots its just been dwarf.
