Slaters getting my strawberries (forum)

I have finally got enough strawberries going so that I might be able to pick a bowl full at any one time but those blasted slaters are getting them first.
Does anyone know how I can stop the slaters getting my ripe strawberries?

I am not sure how slaters look like but i do know many many bugs love strawberries and their gorgeous leaves. Are yours growing in a pot?? I have all mine in pots and they are easier to maintain (strawberries dont rot too cos hanging out of pots) and I net all my pots so this season I havent got any bugs attacking them and they are growing great. :)

Try coffee grounds ... the slugs slaters don't seem to like the smell. It doesn't harm them, but they seem to keep away. Plus, the coffee is good for the soil and worms.
Or you could put left over beer in containers burried to ground level - the slaters like the smell and go in and drown.

Multiguard Snail pellets keep slaters away too. Non- poisonous - they contain iron (or copper? Forget). A friend of mine noticed slaters dying and contacted Multiguard, who did a trial. Sure enough, they worked on slaters.
Like auOrey, I grow mine in pots. My problem was Portugese millepedes. I mixed copper sulphate with petroleum jelly and smeared under the rims. It has worked a treat, but now little lizards have discovered them. No idea what to do about those, though the damage isn't too bad.

That's a good tip Julie! Slaters love arid zones a little too much - they eat my tomatoes also, if they touch the mulch!
Luckily I can keep the bob-tails out of my veg patch - cos' they eat the tom's too! (and the strawberries)

Coffee grounds and multigard. I will try to drown them in beer too although I dont think they really deserve it.
Thanks for the quick responses. Look out slaters!
I dont use pots anything but tough ornamentals these days (and aloe vera) because it is too much of a wind up keeping them happily moist in hot weather.
regards,
Haakon
