Something's eating my baby Figs (forum)

Grant starts with ...
Anyone have any ideas what might be doing this to my little figs. My tree has only been in for a bit over 12 months and is doing really well, but i can't catch what's doing this.

Hi Grant, my first thought is rats, if it was in my garden I would bag the figs, for fruit fly as well.I am at Tweed and fruit fly will just decimate the crop.I have a mosquito net from B.C.F. over my tree which is in a pot like yours.Make sure the bottom of the net is tucked in so nothing gets under it.

The organza bags John Mc has been promoting are good for keeping rats at bay too, as well as excluding fruit fly. They are pretty foolproof if applied early on.

Makes sense, i've had a mouse/rat in my roof for the past few weeks that i haven't yet 'relocated' and all the fruit that has been chewed has been low down. May be that my tardiness has cost me some delicious figs, but hopefully a lesson learnt. Cheers for the thoughts!

I also think mice...your figs are low enough to be within reach. Either that birds but i guess birds would prefer riper figs? Since your fig trees are so small, two layers of netting over the whole tree would be easy.

When birds eat fruit they are not very tidy, there would be ragged pieces etc.and birds like ripe fruit.Dont ever think that branches are low enough for rats and mice....they can go up branches in a flash.They can run to the top of a tree if there is food there.
