You have to kill both. The ants farm the aphids that excrete the hoeny dew that promotes the growth of the sooty mould.
Kill the aphids, ants first and some general fungicidal sprays will clear up the rest eg copper oxychlride, mancozed etc.

Hi George - I use a thick band of vaseline around the trunk to stop the ants and then spray the plant with soapy water or white oil to get rid of the aphids, mould etc (leave overnite and wash off in morning)
Then track down the ant nests, pour boiling water down the hole or nicotine solution (if u smoke) or - if they are a real problem and u don't mind using chemicals - find out what they like to eat. Some ants gobble up Amdro/Max force - which isn't too nasty. But others don't (eg Bull ants). Personally - I try not to kill my "good" ants - just re-direct them. But I do get the odd invasive and bitey ones. The relationship is as Jimmy says - get rid of the scale etc n the ants go somewhere else.

Thanks for the info. I did try some hand vaseline and it split the trunk of the tree. Is there a particular vaseline that may be used. l did spray the tree with malathion and it got rid of the scale but not the ants. George
