Sour Cherry tree varieties (forum)

Hello,

I have inherited a wonderful sour cherry tree - my father had it brought from the former Yugoslavia more than 30 years ago. It was known locally as the "Spanish cherry" because it was very large and dark. It is a grafted cherry. It is much larger than the Morello cherry.

The only problem I have, is that it is not self-pollinating. We always get some fruit, but very little, considering the size of tree.

I do not know its name, so would be grateful if anyone has any ideas.

Mainly, I would like to purchase a cherry tree for the specific purpose of cross-pollinating the "Spanish cherry" tree.

Does anyone have any information, ideas or suggestions?

Thank you for your time.

Montmorency, Kentish and Morello are some other varieties sometimes available - you may find a second cultivar increases fruit set on your tree. Yalca still have a few in stock

Thank you. I have 3 trees (2 small, but all flowering - grafted cultivars of the same). It does not seem to have made any difference. I will be planting a Morello and a Stella to see if somehow this can help.

Good idea. The grafts from your original tree won't help fruit set, but getting a different variety should maximise your chances.
