Mine has very-very few spikes Suzanne and they are great producers, it's about the only citrus I'm having any luck with at the moment. You should be able to tell by looking at the graft point, anything below that is root stock as a rule.

I have a West Indian lime which has no spikes and produces more fruit than I know what to do with.
I bought another lime some time ago, to grow in a bag, but it turned out to be Tahitian lime, and does have nasty spikes. It is also very acid and has very small fruit - I much prefer the flavour of the W.Indian lime.

Could be a Kaffir lime, are its' leaves like a double lobed shape, with huge thorns? and are the fruit smal and lumpy?
