Tahitian lime (forum)

Hi, I was wondering if anybody has had the same problem with their Tahitian lime, my plant is 4 years old and very healthy, the plant flowers well and the fruit seems to set then over a short period of time it will drop all its fruit, I have wantered and fertilized as required. I also know a couple of other people in my area who have had the some problem. I am hoping somebody has had this problem and managed to solve it, if you have I would love to hear from you. The soil here is quite sandy but I have mulched the soil. cheers

If it's happening to everyone in your area it is probably something to do with the soil and it would be worth getting the pH tested. Also uneven watering (i.e. dried out then drenched) can also cause fruit drop.

The opposite has occurred for me, Ernie. The tree is 2 years old & still spindly because in my eagerness to pick my own limes I let 6 fruit mature.
BTW My Tahitian is in soily sand with lots of sheep manure, potting mix & chicken manure pellets. I have since added more pellets, kitty litter & wetting granules. Very few immature fruit fell off & again I notice flowers & tiny fruit appearing. I do water in worm juice, & sulphate of potash occasionally. Hope that helps.

Hi Mary, yes we did think that so we made sure that the watering was even also, one of the guys mentioned grew Tahitian limes in northern QLd and he is also confused?? I have been adding sugar cane mulch now for a few months so hopefully this will correct some of the problems.....cheers Ernie

Thanks snottiegobble, I haven't tried the kitty litter as yet, don't have any pets! but, I alternated the fertilizer. I have just planted another in a different location just to see if the other one just doesn't likes its position....thanks

Apparently citrus can take up to 4 yrs to 'settle' and get established before they allow themselves to set fruit.
Our meyer lemon, planted 4 yrs ago, has, every year, flowered, had pea sized fruit that never got any larger and then fell off. This is 1st year we have lemons that are full sized and ready to pick !

Hi miss lou - I wonder when you said it took 4 years for a lemon tree to fruit if you meant 4 years since you bought it? How old was the tree 4 years ago - was it a seedling or a grafted tree? I'd bought citrus that had flowered and fruited non stop since the day I brought them home and others that just sits there looking comfortable but won't produce at all.

Planted Tathian Lime Tree 6 years ago. Plenty of Fruit Set but never grew larger than 5-6mm then dropped off. Last summer a second Shoot came up from the base & it has produced good size fruit but they are all Rind & very little fruit. located in Southern Melbourne. Sandy soil but providing Chook manure as nutrient. Will this new branch improve or do I cut it out & start again?

Steve, cut off that shoot! It sounds as if it is coming from below the graft and should be removed. It will take over if left alone.
