Been hearing about these taste tests and wondered exactly where this was being done .
Well at our local South Johnstone DPI .
The 15 selected new types are being grown there , some of the ones being tasted are
Khai Bonng , High Noon , Gros Michel , Ney Poovan , Yenai , F-26 , and FHAI-18

Well Trikus, I certainly hope some of them taste better than the tastless ones' we buy in the supermarkets.

I appreciate that the growers need to produce volumes and that WW's and Co. require everlasting fruit but boy, they sure have no taste

Was amazed to read that the market for 'exotic' bananas is $15 - 20 million p/a mainly Red Dacca & Ladyfinger .
I know a few people now planting Ducasse , its very tasty as is Blue Java .
Very little info on most of the names given , but I bet they will taste pretty good . FHAI-2 or 'Mona Lisa I am eating now are very good .

The only other banana we get here (besides the usual boring suspect) is Lady Finger - and I think they are lovely! Are there better 'nana's than this? (Lady fingers also expensive) I had no idea there were so many varieties guys.

Pisang Ceylon had a very good tangy flavour , almost indistinguishable from Mona lisa , but a much different look . Where Mona Lisa is a very large cavendish shape , the ceylon is a much smaller fatter sugar / Ladyfinger shape .
pics here are , red back pink rib ceylon foliage at about 6 months after planting , cow broke into block and ate down a few times . box with big bluggoe plantains and Blue Java , and one hands worth of ceylon.
I had so much fruit I took some into town on market day and offered taste tests to people walking the street , sold a few other fruits as well .

5 types nearly ready to eat , just picked Blue Java so not pictured .from left . Pisang Kering then Ducasse , Pisang Ceylon , Mona Lisa .. mate gave me a few of the Khai Bonng , and they were a bit tasteless , seems they are a very fast ripener , only 6 weeks from bell emergence to picking , another I tasted recently also was a very old cv. Santa Catarina Prata it was used in the breeding of Gold Finger , and is a very robust thick trunked type that withstands cyclones very well .

I made a note of them somewhere , but may take months to find it again .. most of the unusual ones are listed here , others have been around a while just not grown commercially .

Yes the Goldfinger and Pisang Ceylon are neck and neck in growth. The plants pictured below are around 8 months old, that's very good growth for this area.

Have you tried the Gold Finger Laisla? I don't know about green eating quality,(maybe that's what you're referring to), but as a ripened fruit they beat Cav's by a mile. The have a good taste with a little bit of tanginess if they're not over-ripe.

Hi VF

No I haven't; I've just heard it. Apparently Coles ditched it from sale in NSW because people didn't like the taste.

I've never really harvested bananas before and wanted to ask if these look ripe? They are on my Dwarf Ducasse and fruit are held between 5-6ft high. i need to thin the clump a bit, but these seem to do quite well even with competition from its own suckers and a nearby crepe myrtle. blue java behind these does not do well with competition and gives poorly filled out bunches in less than ideal situations.

I am no smarty pants but.......no BJ they are not ripe and you will notice them go yellow when they are.
They are mature enough to ripen after picking now.I would take one hand at a time and leave the rest on the plant. You may get 4 weeks of action out of that lot.

Laisla, I'm sitting here munching on a Lady Finger and a Gold Finger to compare - flavour very much the same, perhaps GF slightly creamier. GF much bigger though, maybe too big for some. (I buy from local grower.) From memory, I think when I last saw at shops they were a bit pricey, so that and being too big(?) may have been their downfall.

Dwarf ducasse is a banana than can have an edge.I reckon they will ripen nicely and won't fill out much if any more.BMc might have to pick a hand and wait 6 days to test the theory.

Fruit might ripen but will have no flavour at all . Only fruit I know that has an edge when picked is Bluggoe. Advice is always wait until lowest hands have rounded out . BJ's are almost square !

trikus I don't think so and they will only round out a bit more.Flavour should be pretty good and alot of bananas can have a bit of edge like that when ripe.
BJ will have to take a hand off and report back.
