Good luck to the people of QLD and NSW. I hope every one is ok considering this unseasonal weather has been happening in the last few days.
Take care.
Lucy.

Thanks Lucy,
Green plants (except dead, black grass on verges that seems to have resented being baked at 35-40 degrees for weeks on end without water, then submerged for days). The downside is that a lot are uprooted and broken. There are a lot of trees down around here. We lost a fruiting banana plant and the ice cream bean was half uprooted and on the ground, but I chopped some off and propped it up, it may recover.
Thinking about people in Ipswich, Rocky, Gladstone, Bundaberg and further north- stay safe. This person is not really trimming a hedge in floodwater surely?

I had about 240mm one night early last week and 400mm altogether. It has been 36/37c everyday since but with humidity at saturation level.North and south of me has had rainfall totals that are crazy.
No wind problems David? The floods here have eased and roads and rivers are getting back to normal.

I've had lots more than 400. Id say 600 at least for the four days. I dont have a rain gauge but i keep a 30cm high brickies bucket in the yard, which filled more than twice. Areas of the yard turned to jelly and the wind blew a few things flat (Rollinia, soursop, wampee), but they are all green enough to flex back into shape with star pickets. My sister went to Bunnings today to get a few fixes and says its a madhouse.
My neighborhood was lucky this time around with few trees or rooves uplifted. The 2008 storms (Gapocalypse) cleaned up the trouble trees around here and now we only have storm hardened ones.

Hi all, yeah Mike some wind but no problems ,have been taking some of your advice ,over the last year or so have slowly been lowering the height of all the fruit trees, last one to do is the 7m carambola, Bj sorry to hear of the flattened trees hopefully will recover with the odd star picket or two.

You wouldnt believe it but we've got water restrictions and a few suburbs could run out of water tonight. Water treatment plant is full of silt.

Love that pic Diana,
It might not be all that stupid, as I see it anyway, but then I buck traditional methods too sometimes. Taking advantage of the water line, at least, she will have a perfect straight and level hedge.

Hooray, power back on(no more bucketing water) and phone reconnected after 70+hrs! Over 500mm rain in guage (lost track) and winds to 125km/hr. No real damage fortunately - lots of staking though, hopefully no permanent root problems. Many places do look like a bomb zone, trees shattered or uprooted, gardens decimated. Power lines still down in some places and landslides still need clearing. All recoverable though, and still in a better place to be than for the poor folk around Bundy etc. Hopefully more services available tomorrow now,(eg Aust.Post), and I can send seed to those whom I've promised them to.

Good to hear VF. Our power came back on in the early hours of this morning too after 50 hours (nothing compared to 2011, when it was 8 days), but we didn't need it for pumping water- that's rough. I hope your trees are OK staked, I think they would be.
That thought about the water level for hedge trimming had occurred to me too John. Why not?

Thanks David and Diana.
Maybe better luck next year then David. You have keen eyes, and may find a new different mango to have a go with in the mean-while.
Diana, power came back right on time as a couple of things in the freezer were just starting to slightly defrost - I don't envy the 8 days you had previously. I'm thinking the trees will recover as they are young, and are among the least fussy of my fruit trees. I lost the few little fruits on KT mango and Maher black sapote, unsure about my tomatoes at this stage (lots of fine splitting), and the stems on my rhubarb are exploding - that's a pretty light let off re the conditions.

Freezer contents. I had been stockpiling Atherton raspberries to make jam and I did manage to make two jars with the thawed raspberries OK. We saved some lemon juice, ate the passionfruit, some guava, potato and carrots but the rest is in the compost bin :(
Thanks VF, fingers crossed that the half ripe and green tomatoes develop normally. My ripe tomatoes exploded too except for the broad ripple yellow currant (a bulletproof variety under any conditions it seems), but the greener ones are OK so far.
Diana.

Great contents of your freezer Diana, I'm assuming all home grown? Glad you were able to salvage some produce, but what a shame for the rest.
My Santorini tom's have sailed through and look fine, cherry's will recover ok, but the poor Tigerella looking very sad (both existing fruit and plant)... May lose my Babaco too, but I'm not sure - mature leaves droopy, but new growth still erect. I got the garden fork under it, and gently lifted it in a few places to aerate somewhat - storm again last night won't have helped. Oh well....

There were almost no power cuts or damage in the north from the Low.The area is used to rain and wind of the type experienced. The heat since the storm passed has been exceptional as it is unusual for humidity to max out when temps are above 35c.
The people in south east Queensland from Rocky to the Border seem to be getting 1 in 100 year events every second year.I hope the most impacted people get the support they need.Qld politics now is such that it seems unlikely much help will come from the state.
