Termites in my wine barrel (forum)

Hi, I decided to repot my Avocado tree from a plastic pot into a larger wine barrel that I has had a Camelia in it for just under a year.
I removed the Camelia and all the soil from the wine barrel and the inside of the barrel was COVERED in white ants,thousands of them, they have eaten through a third of the thickness of the wood in less than a year. I've hosed out the barrel and have left it in the sun. This should drive the remainder out of the wood.
How can I stop termites getting in again if I repot with the Avocado?
The barrel sits on a brick paved area.
I don't want to use any chemicals. If white ants do get in again can they harm my Avocado tree?
I'll be waiting for any suggestions before I continue repotting my Avocado.
Should I repot with the Avocado tree?

Mikey Mike - having spend a summer re-building the roof of a house because of termites I'd be focused on getting rid of the little nasties. (Seriously - within months of spot treatments they'd travelled between the double bricks and chomped in some significant structural damage).
Termidor solved our problem. It doesn't deter so the termites walk it back to their nest and infect the entire nest. Termidor prevents them from building a new exoskeleton so when they shed they become piles of jelly.
It is not organic and it is a powerful chemical; but you'd not need to treat the pot and your avocado won't be taking up any nasties. A dead nest means no more termites in any of your pots or potentially getting into your house. Ensuring your house is safe is probably more of a worry than an avocado. (And if you're in a rental - let the land lord know ... most would be more than happy to pay to protect their investment!)
I'm not in the industry, but with termites I'd recommend paying that little bit extra for a reputable professional and good chemicals.

Termites will not come into the light. If your barrel is sitting directly on the pavers then u will have an ongoing problem.
You need to lift the barrel off the ground - use solid bricks (not the one's with holes in them) and a piece of tin that extends out past the brick. That way u can inspect for their mud-tunnels and take action.

Creosote soaked pieces of wood are also good for pot feet. I would also get the pest controllers in to inspect my property, if it were me.

Thanks all for your tips, I remember speaker to a pest control guy years ago who did some spot treatments around the house. He said that you can never get rid of termites because they have many nests that all link up and that they cover a vast distance. I will do some more investigation on his beliefs and look into getting rid of the little critters.
