Hi everyone

Can anyone identify the disease that causes stunted growth of my tomatoes? The plant starts off well and fruits but by mid January the bottom leaves start to die as shown in photo. From then on it produces no more tomatoes. I was told by friends this is normal in Melbourne. I moved here from Wellington NZ over 15 years ago and has no problem growing tomatoes there however it was grown in a hot house and had tomatoes till end of May. For the last 10 years in Melbourne I have had the same problem

70, I can't be sure, but it looks very like my tomatoes this year. If it's the same thing,it could be tomato russet mite.

Never seen or heard of it before, and it took me a while to find out. If I'd known what it was I'd have treated it earlier. I cut them all back and dusted with Yates tomato dust. We still had more warm weather to come, and they took off and produced tomatoes (still green).

But it seems to have come back, so another dusting tomorrow. Fingers crossed that's the end of it!

Hi 70
I believe that you wont be able to see the tomato russet mite as I understand that it is almost microscopic.

The treatment is with sulphur which is in the tomato dust, however I spray my tommies with wettable sulphur with a small pressure pack making sure that I take off the dead leaves and spray the stem of the plant and both sides of the leaves. Seems to work for me.

I hope that helps
