Hi Glen
Your tomato problem is not a biological one. It's called sun scald or sunburn. Erect a 50% shade cloth to protect your plant or if they are in pots move them away from the scalding afternoon sun. Probably to an eastern location so they only receive morning to noon sun.
I have included an image of a sunburnt tomato for comparison and verification purposes.
Happy Gardening :-)

Thats sunburn, ie fruit is cooked on the exposed side to direct sun. Sometimes overhead irrigation can make it worse. You can shade from that side especially on hot days.
