Trees suitable for Espalier and Pots (forum)

Oh indecision!

I am planning out my fruit garden and have 4 beaut locations for some longed for fruit trees. The Grumichama, Loquat, Acerola Cherry and Black Sapote.

I was thinking of espaliering the Acerola Cherry, planting out the Loquat in the garden bed keeping it pruned to 3m high and 2m width with the Grumichama and Black Sapote planted in say half wine barrels.

Would this be sensible?

Which tree is most suitable to each planting situation - garden bed, espalier and large pot?

All locations would be north facing.

Would these trees fruit ok in Newcastle NSW?

Also, how well would a dwarf Granny Smith or Sweet Cherry do in this clime ?
Newcastle NSW is 2 hrs nth of Sydney

I think you will be too warm for the granny smith or a cherry, if you are in a frosty hollow they may be OK but if you are coastal you will do much better with tropical apples, remember you need two different varieties for cross pollination. Acerolas will be OK to espalier, make sure to wear a long sleeved shirt and gloves when working with your acerola as the foliage is covered in tiny stinging hairs that are very irritating to the skin. The black sapote will need to be a grafted variety to succeed in a wine barrel, a seedling will be too vigorous, large and take too long to fruit.

Kath, does Daley's have a grafted black sapote? I couldn't see any. I would really love to grow a black sapote in Melbourne, but as it's probably too cold here I was going to grow it in a pot.

i'm from melbourne too and i got advice from perry's nursery in adelaide that grafted varieties of black sapote are easier to grow in melbourne and can grow in pots. cheers.
