I have 2 pears, a Flordahome and Hood but both have struggled with something that makes leaves turn black and drop off, anyone got a clue?

Grant its called winter.
They are trying to shut down to hibernate as best they can - a spray of leafcurl copper spray could help before new leaves show also - my lamb Hass are still shiny - still a bit to go - keep us posted after a couple weeks how you like their taste. Wait till they go a bit black & try using a toothpick to check its firmness until you work out when they are ripe?
