JUJUBE FOR SALE IN MELBOURNE starts with ...
Hi all,

I was given this "American gingeng" but when I googled and found it does not look like a gingseng at all.

It would be wonderful if you could give me the true identity of this plant please.

Many thanks in advance.

Looks like Pokeroot to me I will post pick of mine. Picture 1,2,3
Cancer fighting herb, I think its relatively toxic etc. I think I read on my seed pack handle root with gloves. I haven't had any reaction to handling the plant though.

Your American Ginseng (Ashwanganda) should look like this, Picture 4,5,6
mine is being attacked by spider mites but you get the idea.

I agree, Pokeroot (Phytolacca sp.)

Ashwaganda (Withania somnifera- Solanaceae) (pic.4,5,6)
is from Asia and is used medicinally in the Ayuvedic system as an adaptagen and is supposed to have a simmilar effect to ginseng.
It is sometimes refered to as 'Indian Ginseng'.

American Ginseng (Panax quinquifolius- Araliaceae) is very closely related to Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng)and can be a bit tricky to grow, requiring a forest environment with the right amount of shade and moisture.
It takes at least 3yrs from seed for the plant to grow big enough to harvest, but worth it if you have or can provide the conditions for it to do well.

Hi Charles cant spell and Speedy,

Many thanks for the information. Much appreciated. I think I will get rid of it due to its toxic nature.

sometimes we just take it on good faith that a plant is what someone tells us it is (and why wouldn't we),
to then find out down the track there has been confusion somehow.
It happens a lot.
even nurseries get the id of some plants wrong at times.
and sometimes the correct info is just not available or only part of the story.
