Watercress (forum)

Does anyone grow watercress? You don't need a pond, it grows happily in good soil in a tub, or like mine,in a styrofoam box. Grows from seed or cuttings.
Mine is in its third season now, and I didn't remember to feed it till the end of summer. It is a real 'magic pudding' plant - cut it one day and it's back the next. It needs no more water than lettuce.
Now it's a bit cold for salads, I cut bunches of it to add to soups and stirfries.

Hi Julie,
I do grow watercress in a tub/pond,it is very slow growing at the moment. You are right, it just needs moist soil. Very healthy plant to have because it has lots of iron.

My best spot is a bird bath, I have a aquarium pump that puts water from my fish pond up into the bird bath, there is a huge mat of cress roots but little to no soil, it grows like crazy.
The plant will grow much better in running water as this is its natural and preferred environment.
This also doubles as a very effective insect watering spot. They dont go to the pond near your feet, as its safer and easier to land amongst the cress.
