wax jambu seeds (forum)

Hi out there, I am keen to grow some sweet dark red wax jambu if anyone has some spare seeds at any time. ( Syzygium samarangense aka Eugenia javanica) . Not the tiny specks that you get in a seedless fruit but about 10mm? I already have the sweet white fruiting one. Many thanks.

So I am keen to try a red one from a sweet fruit variety if there are the odd rare seed becomes available. I guess all the sweet seedless varieties were originally from a seed.

I personally am waiting for a seedless macadamia.The more highly derived Thai and Taiwanese varieties are never seeded, even with brumby seeds.There are only a few trees in Australia of top S.samarangense.

The red one from thailand is called tubtim and has tiny seeds.

The rainbow ones have larger roundish seeds.Those are called chomphu phet si rung.

I grew that one myself and it had very sweet apples but the fruit gets attacked all the time, also by fungus when in a netbag.

I can send the seeds later in the year.

Not all thai wax-apples are good, but i believe they all can be good if picked ripe and not sprayed with loads of chemicals to keep the critters away.

I collected these tree's and had 11 varieties. But i culled all of them since they had too many issues all the time and i have no space for them in full sun.

Many times they taste like pure water from the supermarkets. You have to find good sweet ones on local markets, when they have sweet ones it's very busy at those stands..

The new varieties have big seeds from 1 cm diameter.

Many thanks for the kind offer of seeds. Unfortunately I have just discovered that as of recent it is very difficult to bring them into NZ from overseas. They now require treatment with methyl bromide which I guess would be hard on the seeds viability.

Hi Denise, I live in Auckland too an have been trying to find anyone locally / in the country that sells Wax Apples trees as I am keen to grow one.

Could you please let me know where you sourced your white ? Or alternatively if I could get some cuttings or seeds from you? Happy to pay for courier etc.
