When should Passion Fruit Flower? (forum)

14 responses

Passion Fruit starts with ...
It is End March and our Passion Flowers are prolific. ALmost all of the flowers are dropping off, but the vine is green and healthy.
WHy are they dropping off and is March the right time for them to be flowering in Perth.
How should I go about getting fruit at the right time? We are of course moving into WInter, I would have expected flowers in Spring.

Gee glennis, all that water might be alright in Perth's sand, but over here, passionfruit like life on the dry side of moist IMO.

Also, spraying the vine with liquid Potash will help with falling flowers, fruiting etc.

I give my red panama 2 x 9 litre watering cans in the morning and afternoon plus it gets the downpipe water . Have only had a hundred fruit so far . It is on a slope with red loam soil though . It has only been in 15 months .

Dpi
Vines can require up to 400 L per vine per week
from August to January depending on weather
conditions, soil type and depth.

That's probabaly not far off what my vines get glennis...plus - they have very shallow roots so I find watering often (like u suggest) is the way to go - rather than a couple of deep soaks/week (where the water is likely to go past the roots and be wasted)

PassionFruit is in Perth - so it will take a lot of water...
Grab one of those $10 water moisture readers from Bunnings too...they help take the guess work out of it :)

Amanda that is big bucks for passionfruit.I had panama yellow and red and a yellow african (from limberlost) for a few years. All were loaded with fruits during their lives and the african was exceptionally large, sweet and had deep orange pulp.I haven't found them again and find myself buying selections of yellow passionfruit seeking that familiar taste. On friday I got about 5 or more potentially different types and one turned out to be a very nice P.ligularis.None of the flavs were out of the ordinary and I was put out at paying 50c a piece.

Glennis,I also bought a whopper 9cm long and 7cm wide weighing 164g but it is sour as I try to eat it now.The ligularis are aromatic, up to 105g with an unusual milky, musky taste and have pale yellow pulp. The african ones I am seeking also have a strong aroma.

Glennis this one is in the hawaiin style with yellow rather than orange pulp and they are often a bit sour.Potash, micronutrients and sulphur in fertilisers can sweeten them a bit but warm weather also helps.
