When to pick rock melons? (forum)

I have a few rockmelons ripening, but because they are smaller than water melons they are not as easy to tell by "drumming"
Last year I experienced both picking too soon & some starting to rot!
Would appreciate advice!

you should be able to smell when they
are ripe (becomes fragrant)
another way is to use your index finger
and gently flex the stem where is joined
to the melon, when ripe it will come
away easily.

Thanks peter, I tried the index finger trick, but they held on. One or 2 are just starting to perfume up so maybe a couple of days, or a week would you say?
