Where to get Straw Mulch? (forum)

17 responses

Hi,

We are slowly getting our fruit trees and vege patch going, and we keep hearing about people using straw mulch...

Where can I get some? (I'm North of Perth, relatively close to Wanneroo).

I imagine I could get some from local farmers, but I don't know any !

thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul - City farmers may have some - also try your bulk soil/mulch suppliers. Make sure you don't get hay - unless you want all the weeds!? :( If u can afford it - the lupin, lucern or pea straw bales are the go - more nitrogen and less weedy.

Knights & Sons along Prindiville drive (near Wanneroo Markets) have all these types of mulches in small bales that you can purchase.

Hi All,
I would be careful about the pea straw. I brought some from a reputable organic supplier and the peas grew. This was fine but when I went to put in my own peas they went all mildewey. I had never had this problem before. I can only think that the pea mulch had the problem and then passed it to my peas. I now use sugar cane mulch from Bunnings. It is in a big white bag and costs $19.95. It covers a very large area. Bunnings in Cannington have some.
Cheers!

I certainly won't be using it again. The sugar cane mulch works fine. I actually took the time to remove all the pea straw and bin it. My peas are now growing great. My son and I snack on the peas every day after work.

Wait until its mid-late summer (harvest time) and you should be able to get wheat straw. Not very high in nitrogen but very good mulch- and far less seeds (weed or otherwise) than pea straw or hay. You'll still get baby wheat growing but you can cut them off/pull them out- or make a wheatgrass energy/health drink -yuck :)

Costs me $6-7 per bale- but availability is seasonal- so you need to put some bales aside if you want to mulch again before late summer.

Apparently fresh straw releases substances that are toxic to seedlings as it's breaking down?

Dunno about the toxins- but straw (or any other high carbon material) will happily rob your soil of nitrogen if not compensated for with a decent nitrogen source.

It is pretty hard to get seedlings going in a deep manuare/straw bed- bigger stuff like corn or spuds are fine- it's easier to raise other stuff in trays/pots and then transplant.

City Framers, petstock or better pets and gardens all stock it.

better still get it from greenlife soil company in bellevue as its organically certified there.

all can be googled.
