Hi I just wanted to know what varieties of plums people in Perth have had success with fruiting? A couple of years ago I bought some prunes robe de sargent and d'argen they both flowered but the little fruit dropped off. I have had fruit from both my starcrimson and lapkins cherry trees. So I figure If it's cold enough for cherries I should it should be cold enough for plums.

I'm down in Bunbury and have had Mariposa and Santa Rosa flowering- try the japanese plum varities- they need less chill than the European ones.

Sorry I wasn't very clear was I- yes they both flowered and produced fruit- although it took 4-5 years to start bearing. I should have got some a year earlier but I netted the trees with their first fruit by just draping the net over the tree- and had to prune pretty hard because the weight of the net distorted the new growth.
Nothing off the santa rosa this year- but I was eating 3 mariposa a day for around 3-4 weeks- plus I let the kids have some.........just a few mind you :)

Hi Mike. I have an old Santa rosa plum which is usually loaded with fruit. I never water it, but it has been there a while.
I am in the hills, so maybe that makes a difference - lot colder in winter up here.

Just wondering if anybody in Perth area has grown Tegan Blue or Black Amber plums and actually got fruit from them. I am redoing my orchard & going to have a go at espaliering my fruit trees-have bought some babies-as the parrots here are shocking- & it will be much easier to net. Just wondering if anyone has had luck with these two types-have done a good search but can't find what their chilling requirements are. Thanks

Hi, Mike. Will be interesting to check with you next spring/summer. I also planted a Robe de Sargent and a D'Agen plum (bought from Dawson) sometime last year. Last spring, I had maybe 4 flowers from the Robe, but nothing from D'Agen. I also have a Sunburst cherry tree (from Waldeck) - but it is doing badly, maybe due to poor positioning of the tree. Presently, the leaves are still hanging on the prune trees, but not many leaves on my cherry. Wait till next summer, and see if any of us is lucky to have some fruit from our labour and patience.

I forgot to add above that I actually dug out the rose bushes, and in their places planted the prune trees.(I actually have about 15 rose bushes, 2 of which were dug out.) Also, I transplanted a magnolia tree, and in its place, planted the cherry. Could it be because of this that my fruit trees are not growing too well? Or is it too early to tell, because I have just planted them a year or so ago. Maybe some knowledgeable gardeners out there care to comment.

Hi tecko - I am aware that the rotting roots of old peaches and apples will retard the growth of the same species planted into the same spot - I don't know about roses though - but you could be onto something?
