Which way should a weathercock face? (forum)

snottiegobble starts with ...
I was given a combination weathervane as a present which includes a thermometer, raingage, 4 points of the compass, revolving wind cups, & a rooster all of which I assembled before putting it in position.
Now having had many chooks & roosters in the past I remember how comical they were with feathers ruffled & pushed around by strong wind when turning their backs to it, specially the long tailed roosters. Naturally just like seagulls they tried to always face the wind, so I placed the weathercock to face the wind. Now we have a disagreement with our neighbour who says the weathercock should face the direction the wind is going! Who is right?

hi sg,
what a great present for a gardener . . . i love weather and all its variety. sounds like fun sg.
i had never given this any thought - i have admired them high on rooftops many times - and never realised they must face a certain way.
just wondering then how can any one placement be right 100% of the time as wind changes direction???'silly' question maybe???
i googled this and it hurt my head :-)
your answer may be found here?:

Thanks Sd, according to that site most agree that the arrow ( roosters head) should point to were the wind is coming from. Only flags should indicate were it is going! So I Win! :)

Yup - the arrow and the rooster face into the wind - I have one too and I see him first thng in the morning and if he is facing East - I get that sinking feeling.... :(
Once the wind was so strong it blew him right off his axis thing...
