whipper snipper ring bark (forum)

Flanno starts with ...
Hi my son has accidentally ring barked my custard apple tree with the whipper snipper. Can I save the tree? thanks

Unless it gets infected, it could recover nicely. You have to act quickly. Give it a rinse with clean water and tie it up completely with grafting tape. You could instead use thread seal tape from plumber or hardware store. Dont tie it extra loose or extra tight. If you cant get the tape right away, put sellotape around it temporarily. You will need to put a top cover if using clear tape, that will keep out light as it will heal better without light.

Great. You could include some sphagnum moss. It is optional. The main thing is to avoid the hot sun. Put some polystyrene foam to reflect heat away would be good.

Has the whippy snipper ring barked all the way around and killed all the bark or is it a partial ring bark, if it is a partial ring bark it should recover fine with the above advice, but a stake could help for strength until the bark grows.

If it is a complete ring bark then a bridge graft is the best way to save it. It will likely sprout below the damage and these sprouts can be slipped under the bark above the damage to create a bridge around the damage.
