White Mulberry Tree (forum)

A couple of months back we had our White Mulberry Tree hammered by a storm. Split all over the place. Although it is still growing, it needs to be cut down to about one foot high. That is the point of the tree that isn't damaged. What I want to know is, Does this tree grow from cuttings and will thay still be white mulberries or will they be black. Regards Jan.

jan,
yes they will grow from cuttings.
im fairly sure they will still be white.
if you have a look at
www.rarefruit-sa.org.au
go to the espaliered tree tab
down the bottom of the page is another
espaliered tree tab, on the bottom of that page they picture a reworked
mulberry which has been cut of at about
6 inches from the ground.
you could do the same to yours.

If you plant a white mulberry cutting and it grows it will have white mulberries. Is the tree grafted and if so is the point where you want to cut it back to above the graft? if so it should just sprout white mulberry wood again. If it is below the graft you could rework it as Peter suggests.

This is what our white mulberry looks like at the moment. The last time I trimmed it about a foot from the ground and it sprouted like crazy in no time

It looks shorter than 1 foot but cannot see clearly enough to see if it is above the graft or not from this picture.

The last time I trimmed it a foot above the ground Jantina, this time about 1/2 that. I think it might have been a seedling, can't remember, anyhow it's not a heavy fruiter and I'm not that fussed on white mulberries so leave them for the birds

My mistake Jantina, I meant grown from a cutting, not grafted

Sorry but I am now confused, Wayne are you talking about the same tree as Jan from Brisbane ? because your address is put down as Mackay? I should've looked at the address properly just assumed you were Jan's partner. Anyhow a cutting grown tree if it is cut down and resprouts will be the same the original tree.

Jantina. It is easy to get confused. I am a Guy of Polish ancestry. My Mulberry was a grafted tree. I think I would prefer a black mulberry, so I might cut it below the graft rather than removing it.. I will also try doing some cuttings from the rest of the tree which is white mulberry. I am not fussed on the white. I got it for my grandkids so they wouldn't get too messy, but I think that is half of the fun with black mulberries.
Regards Jan.

Hi Jan, I have a father called Jan (also Europe), if your white mulberry was grafted to a good black variety then that's what should grow from the stump, but I don't know what sort of mulberry was used for the graft so can't really advise you there.Good luck.
