White Sapote Fruit (forum)

We have had a white sapote growing for many years probably 15-20 years. I think it has had its first fruit - there was a hard yellowish fruit under it today. If it is indeed a white sapote will it soften? When would it be classed as ripe. Thank you

I have never seen a white sapote fruit that looks like that, although I have only seen about four different varieties of the fruit. 15-20 years is a long time for a white sapote to fruit.
Kinda looks like a santol to me.

Yes it could be confusion between sapote and santol, you can tell by the seed, white sapote has seeds that look like big citrus seeds, sapotaceae have dark shiny seed with an eye. Either way it should be ripe when it softens. Let us know what is inside. There are many types of white sapote, and it could be a seedling too.

If I am right It is a plant unrelated to White Sapote called South American Sapote. Quararibea cordata. sometimes called Matisia cordata. Said to have a Mango/Melon taste. It is more tropical than the relatively hardy White Sapote. Does it have round leaves almost heart shaped.

Sorry for the late reply but we have been out of town. Thank you for your responses. I have looked up both suggestions and looked at leaves etc and it appears it is a Santol. We bought many trees years ago and I may have gotten them mixed up over the years. It's still rock hard though - will get back to you once I cut it open. Thank you
