Wild guava (forum)

Not a bad haul for twenty minutes of picking. Wild guavas growing by the roadside around town make the most delicious, ruby red, clear jelly, although they are a little seedy to eat fresh out of hand. I have made my first batch of jelly - yum!

That looks great Phil. I can't beleive that all those guavas grow on the roadside. Do they attract fruit fly?

I think they probably do but early in the season the skin is pretty hard so we didn't find any in the fruit we picked. I use them when they are just turning yellow as it gives the jelly a sharper taste and there is a bit more pectin in them for setting.

Hi PhilAT, isn't guava jelly just the best conserve on the planet!
Spread on buttered toast (NOT margarine!), it's very hard to beat! Yum.
Must make some again next year :-)

A friend gave me a jar of wild guava jelly and it is GOOD! If only my potted tree would produce enough - still I am happy to enjoy them fresh.

Hi MaryT, don't know if you'd get enough guavas from just one tree to make a batch of jelly. I have to raid my own trees, the neighbours trees plus the wild ones growing down the creek! :-)
Well worth it but!

Well Brendan, my neighbours are lucky that they don't grow guavas then. My 'garden' is definitely the odd one out in this lane of garages and car parks. I'm lucky they don't raid mine (but there are few pedestrians here) Anyway, I enjoy eating them fresh; I don't have the problem of a glut except of chillies.

This week Mike kindly send me a brazil pineapple guava (not a feijoa but a round plum sized yellowish fruit) with the most fabulous aroma, not overpowering like the wild type - I intend to allow it to become feral so I can access some extra trees!

Phil the taste is even better with soft seeds. If you look at the Mystery Guava thread from last year it was identified as Psidium guineense subs asuna. It fruits heavily, continuously and is very different from the standard brazil guava. The foliage is more like feijoa thsan cherry or tropical guava.

Mary I am trying to propagate cuttings and might have to lash out and marcot the tree to get new ones.I will certainly get one to you if I am successful but can send fruit any time.

Phil, do you have a good recipe for your guava jelly?
The winter crop is still on the feral yellows and I might try to rustle up enough for a batch as the fruit flies havent overwintered in the citrus or papaya this season.

BJ I halved the guavas and then only just covered the fruit with water in a large heavy saucepan, boiled until the fruit was soft and the water colored up (about 45 min to an hour on a reasonable simmer). Don't stir at this stage at all otherwise the jelly will be cloudy. Let cool, drain through a jelly bag or cloth as you don't want any sediment whatsoever. Weigh the liquid and add an equal amount of white sugar and the strained juice of half a lemon, put back on the stove but make sure the sugar fully dissolves as it heats up otherwise undissolved sugar granules will burn the jelly. Stir occasionally at this stage. When it reaches a deep ruby red color test for setting on a cold saucer, you need to watch it fairly closely. I had to reboil mine as it was a bit runny the first time around, it will usually set fairly quickly on the saucer when it is ready to jar.
