Hi Roleystone Julie - I don't know what these trees are...maybe someone else? They were the ones we talked about ages ago, somewhere...
One is the acacia that grows indcredibly fast. It is prone to limb breakage and if u get hayfever? :(
The other is a very old quite prickly bush - I thought it may be a grevillia?
Anyway let me know if u want more info..I have quite a few other types that I can recommend that are tough and waterwise.

Thats a Hakea.
if you want a windbreak and want native. think about Casaurina and allocasaurina
they make great windbreaks, they feed the seed eating parrots - like the endangered carnaby's cockatoo
and they fix nitrogen. you can rake up the mulch underneath and use it around your trees

I don't know what either of these are, though the one on the right looks like an acacia. How big do they grow amanda?
I think my original comment on this forum was about planting shrubs around a garden instead of a fence. Some time in the future(?) I will be moving to an ecovillage, with no fences allowed. As there are lots of kangaroos on the property, I was thinking of prickly shrubs to keep them at bay, but not huge ones, 2-3 metres at most. I will only have a suburban-sized block, so I need room for other plants too!I guess I want an informal hedge.
There are plenty of trees already which provide a windbreak

Hi Julie - sorry - should have said Roo-Break trees! The photo about is the Hakea (thanks Rev) It's 3m tall, quite old and grows wild (=tough!) it's pretty scrappy looking as it's never been pruned - it's blown over at some time and regrown as in the photo.
It's got a sharp point in the end of each leaf and it's dense - could be hedged fine or left alone.
The Acacia is taller, greedy and send roots out to nearest source of goodies so probly not so good on smaller block.
If u are interested in seeds from the Hakea let me know as it's got lots of pods.
