Anyone have thoughts on whether or not to use a wound sealer when pruning fruit trees? If they are needed do you need to buy a commercial product or does anyone know of a homemade alternative? Thanks

a homemade alternative is a paste made from hydrated lime with water added.

Hi Karnup Kath...I use a sealant (Steri-prune - it's a tar like spray) I have had no problems with wound healing. I generally use it on big wounds, fussy trees (like apricot) or when I think the weather not going to be good for clean healing.
I don't use it on small twig cuts. Although it the most important thing when lopping branches is to make the right cut - that's the hard part! :) that always leads to good closure in the first place.

Hi Kath
The local organic orchardist just uses water-based acrylic paint- he checks out the tip for half empty tins.
I have always used this too, and have had no problems with disease. It seems the important thing is to seal the cut.

One more thing - if you are concerned about spreading disease, always sterilise your secateurs. You can use a disinfectant, or a quick way is to carry a lighter and run the flame along the blades.

Not for too long as the metal may be heat treated to give it hardness and this will be destroyed by substantial heating.
