Yellow Cherry Guava (forum)

These turned out to be delicious (if you like guavas); I'd netted them inside an organza bag over the branch and they just fell in when they're ripe. Like getting a gift bag of fruit. I eat them seeds (hard) and all.

Better than strawberry guava, Jujube? I have yet to see a flower/fruit on my strawberry one. In fact I was thinking of tossing it (a friend will take it over). Space is precious around here :)

Hi MaryT,
I have both strawberry and yellow guava trees and I found that the yellow one has less seeds, bigger fruits and much sweeter.
I found that if you pinch the top of new growth it will branch out and have flowers quicker that what I did with my strawberry plant.

Is a yellow strawberry guava the same as a yellow cherry guava?
(I have red and yellow strawberry guavas - and agree with u guys - the yellow is best eating out of hand...I think the red would be better in cooking or for paste etc...it's very, very intense in flavour I find?)

Thanks for the tip, Jujube; I sure feel like pinching it. :)
Amanda I only have one yellow cherry guava and one strawberry guava (a Diggers dud) and can't answer your question. I'm lucky with the yellow cherry as Mike said they're the least flavoursome of guavas. No he said they are the least flavoursome of the guavas he has.

Cherry vs Strawbwerry....wish they would get the names right?! Anyway - my yellow strawberry same size as yours but less seeds. I will pick and post a pic tomorrow to check though.
I just eat them whole too MaryT...I don't crunch the seeds...just kind of eat around them..?
I do crunch my passionfruit seeds tho..hehe ;)
(ps - there are yellow and red strawberry guavas? plus a cross - an orange strawberyy guava..)

You develop a technique for eating certain foods - my teeth don't touch the seeds; I imagine if you bite one you might break a filling. :)

I have heard varying info on the size of the yellow cherry guava. Tag says 2-5m tall which is pretty vague. Other people say it's small, 1.5m.

Thanks DB for the reply. I am hoping someone who has grown yellow cherry (or lemon) guava can fill me in here.

If you look at my photo at the top of the thread you can see a five cent piece to give you an idea of the fruit (pingpong ball size). As for the tree, I have mine in a pot and it's about 1.5m from the soil which means it is out of my reach at the top so I'll cut it back. Full of fruit at the moment tho' still small and hard. Is that what you want to know?

It's growing in a 70cm square pot. Tommoz we thought you were just making a statement and didn't realise you wanted input. :)

Db not sure; three years since I bought it? From Daleys. Fruited last year but not a lot. Went berserk this year. YUmmm
Tommoz I'll never know how tall mine can be since I'll be keeping it short to keep it reachable for me. Someone else might know?

In the tropics 3m rarely to 8m in old well looked agfter specimens and can easily be kept pruned to 1.5m.In cooler sub tropical/warm temperate 2m is more normal but usually smaller. The is a 5m red cherry guava next door to me that was recently cut back to 3.5m.

Mike..I found my yellow cherry guava plants were not as vigorous as the red..? They didn't seem to grow as "prettily" either..? A bit haphazard - I thought it might be because they were too busy making impressing loads of fruit (far more than the reds) to grow properly..?
Do you find that too..?
Also - do the yellows come true to type from the seeds of a very isolated yellow parent plant..?

Amanda my yellow cherry is productive but the red strawberry just grows and sprawl everywhere, flowered this year but no fruit (there may be one or two still hanging on). I have bossed it right back so hopefully it'll take the warning seriously. Mike like Amanda I would like to know whether the yellow cherry would grow true from seeds. I like mine so much perhaps I should start some seedlings or take some cuttings just in case. How long do they live for?

Amanda they both vary in form and maybe the red is bigger.Yellows are true from seed and usually have a few more fruit than reds and fruit are a feather larger.
