Leaves aare turning yellow some branches are dying or drying out.

It looks like a casimiroa or white sapote. They usually are semi deciduous, so it's normal for the older leaves to yellow and drop every year. You should get a new crop of leaves soon after.

The soil at the base of the tree looks kinda dry, white sapotes are thirsty plants, or is that fertilizer or ash on the ground? Either way you should water it in heavily.

It's summer/autumn in Florida - so it should be ok? I am wondering about the ash thing too Rex...ash can be very alkaline stuff 'sapodilla tree' - maybe scrape it away and put in your compost bin rather than around the tree?
Something has upset your plants nutrient balance, anyway. Try giving it a good flush like Rex says, then a rest, and then a good all purpose fertiliser.
