Yellow tomatoes (forum)

Wayne starts with ...
This is the third generation of seeds from a Gourmet tomato. They started red, last year they were red, the bushes next door have red fruit but this one has yellow fruit.
I thought it was sunburn but now the mature fruit throughout the bush are turning yellow instead of red. This bush has been treated no differently to the others and it is full of fruit even though it has looked as if it always needed water.
Strange?

Interesting Wayne - what do they taste like? Maybe u have something "new"!!
Was the original gourmet an heirloom type or a modern hybrid?

Sounds like they were a hybrid
and now they are segregating out in the successive generations
so is it a good bush? tasty toms?
might as well save the seed if it is
Tomatos tend to self pollinate so over time the line will stablize
its a short generation time so its quite feasible to breed your own tomato
Julie Firth has a variety called "lemon Boy", which is a lemon yellow heat resistant tomato, indeterminate and very good. Its a stabilised hybrid. The true lemon boy is and F1 you can still buy, but here strain has been growing true for??more than 13 years - thats when i cleaned seed last!
Tomatos come in white, red, yellow, pink, orange, purple and greens
theres different genes coding for skin colour & flesh colour which interact to give the Hues.
im currently contemplating hybridising the black russian. Its a good tomato for cooler climates - but im up here in the heat. Id like to cross it with 'Tropic', or with the cherry tomato. apparently all tomato species are crossfertile and have always been favourite play things of people studying genetics.
if i succeed ill just be doing the same as you. sow and sift [repeat]

Hi Rev,
IMHO, the Black Krim tomato is far superior than the Black Russian.
Years ago we had a blindfolded tomato taste test, and the Black Krim won hands down:-)
Second place was the Mortgage Lifter, I think.
Third was Grosse Lisse.

It was a modern hybrid from Bowen Amanda, the ones that look good and last forever on the shelf, made for Woolworths.
The bush is healthy and has a huge crop but is a bit droopy . The toms have a little point on them until they mature, quiet strange.
As far as taste goes, I haven't cut one yet. I have picked a couple and leaving them sit to see what happens.
They seem to be tough critters so don't think they will win any taste tests.
Dreadful news about Bowen, we come from there and grew up with most of the farmers, this will be the last straw for some of them. Farming there is big business, they can make millions but they can loose them just as easy.
I did know more about the economics but am out of touch now. I would guess it could cost a large grower $20 million or more to grow and market his produce now days, so they really do talk big money.

Hi - I find that my yellow and orange tom's are less attractive to the caterpillers?
I have a broad ripple yellow currant - like the lemon boy it is heat resistant and a cherry tom. It's one of the best I have had and kids love them.
I agree that black krim better than the russian - but the fruit gets sunburnt easier here (maybe cos it's dark..?)
I did manage to buy a cherry roma once that was not a hybrid - I let it go bush and the fruit is small but the flavour is like a tomatoe "bomb" in your mouth! It's a race to see who gets to eat them first!

I was just eating some truly wild cherry tomato today --hmm maybe better to call them? i dont know, more large chickpea size - too small for a cherry!
I once had seed from a black cherry tom sent to me from Poland. But i cant find it now :(
That was before AQIS said you cant bring in Tomato seed anymore :( 2007?
anyway that drooping. do you think its nematodes?

I don't think it would be nematodes Rev when the bushes next to it are OK. I was blaming a nearby soursop tree but once again why just one bush
