Wampee - Yeem Pay 9/10![]() Update: 1947 days 5hrs Comments: - Wonderful, rather complex taste. Fruited after 2 years. All the fruit ripened at the same time (February). Attractive shrub, looks healthy thru the whole year (I'm in Sydney). But in second season I got no flowers or fruit. Third season got about 70 fruit. Seedling purchased from Daleys. I planted a few seeds from my first crop and most of them are growing (slowly - 1 year old, just 20cm high), so I suppose that's an easy way to grow them if you're not in a hurry. Fruiting Months February Height 1.4 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 First Fruited: 2 Years from purchase in pot Pollination: No Fertiliser or Organics Used: Citrus fertilizer 3 / year Pest Control: First crop had no pests, but third season about half had Qld fruit fly. (I'll net next season!) If it didn't get fruit fly I'd rate it 11 out of 10. Up there with the yummiest! (although not quite up there with good durians...) Wampee 8/10![]() Update: 4725 days 10hrs Comments: - The Wampi/Wampee is an attractive, evergreen, slender tree and has been described as the finest fruit of Siam (Thailand). It is also a highly valued backyard tree in southern China and southeast Asia. It is classed as a subtropical / tropical fruit, but is relatively hardy and can withstand light frosts. This tree is a relative of the citrus family, thus its ability to grow in coastal Australia as far south as Melbourne and inland where the frosts are not too severe. The fruits are highly aromatic and can be sweet to tangy to almost sour depending on the variety and ripeness. Straight from the tree, Wampee are very refreshing, thirst quenching and cleansing to the palate. They grow in clusters from a few up to eighty in one bunch. The fruits turn yellow when ripe and have a thin, sometimes brittle skin, somewhat like paper. They generally have only 1-2 seeds in each fruit and are best left to ripen on the tree for as long as possible. They are a very attractive looking tree that can grow up to 8 meters with, beautiful dark green ruffled compound leaves. They have a dense growth habit making them an ideal shade tree. Wampee should be treated very much like any of the other citrus trees in regard to cultivation. A sunny, well drained site with plenty of water and organic matter should see these trees thrive. It is a spectacular landscape plant!!! The crop is borne solely on the tips of branches, so the less pruning the better. Very few problems have been observed with pest and diseases other than occasional infestations of aphids. Mature trees can produce up to 50kg of fruit each year. Like its close relative the citrus it is full of vitamin C, approximately 28mg per 100g. This fruit can be used for making jams, jellies, pies, and drinks but best eaten fresh, straight from the tree. If you want them to keep a bit longer you can try leaving the stalks on them.

Wampee![]() Update: 4832 days 21hrs Comments: - Spring 2011: I couldn't resist buying him when I saw him at a spring market. He didn't seem in the best condition - soil had come out of the pot and was exposing roots and his leaves ere yellow- but there was new growth and I knew he just needed some love. His leaves are starting to turn a better shade of green now that I have fed him up. Planted: 2011 Height 30 Centimetres Growing: In a Pot Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pollination: No Pest Control: Got some sort of biggishscale on the upper side of the leaves. Scraped them off with my thumb (squished them) then sprayed both sides of the leaves with pest oil. Was this review helpful? I have a two year old tree in the ground that has plenty of flowers but never any fruit set. I'm thinking of replacing it with a Longan tree .Miranda says... [5180 days 15hrs ago] first year flower, no fruit. second year flower, only 3 fruits. I was about to give it away, but my friend who bought the tree at the same time with me told me that their tree full of sweet fruits. So I kept it, than I had a very good crop last year. fruit was very sweet and nice, only one or no seed. I was so glad that I didn't give it away.Ching says... [4971 days 5hrs ago] Where did you buy Wampi? I live in Sydney area and hope to buy one nearby.Miranda says... [4963 days 19hrs ago] I got it from Daleys. you can try Bonnyrigg Garden centre. If they don't have, they may be able to order one for you. It is better to buy a grafted one.Ching1 says... [4961 days 19hrs ago] Thanks, I have ordered one from Daleys. It is grafted Guy Sam, and I hope it would be sweet. By the way, did you also plant it in a 50L pot like starfuit?Ching says... [4950 days 7hrs ago] Hi, Your wampi looks great. one more question - After you got it from Daleys, did you plant it in the current pot, or you re-pot it to a larger pot from time to time, as the plant grew bigger? If you do the re-potting, each time do you change all the soil or just top-up with some new potting mix? I heard people said that if doing the re-potting, all the soil needs to be changed too, not sure if that is true. ThanksMiranda says... [4943 days 18hrs ago] yes, it was in the same pot (50L)for 5 years. it needs a lot of water, grows very fast and also has strong roots sent out from bottom of the pot. I prunt it haveyly the year before, so it didn't fruit last year. I didn't repot it, only add some potting mix at bottom of the pot and some on the top. It was moved to the ground Feb this year after we moved house. the plant had no growth for many months, most of the leaves went yellow. I was so worry. but now looks better and it is in full bloom.Ching1 says... [4931 days 6hrs ago] Thanks a lot for the information.* You need your own My Edibles Page to contribute Quick & Easy |

Wampee - Yeem Pay (Seedling)![]() Update: 5283 days 1hrs Comments: - Had it in a pot, which might have been too small for it. Got a couple of very small crops of fruit, but it wasn't doing well. Transplanted into the ground, fed and watered it well, and now it is growing vigorously. Looking forward to a much better crop next season. Wampee - Guy Sam![]() Update: 5352 days 24hrs Comments: - My Guy Sam has a tough spot - right up the top if my orchard - hot western position, under the shaddow of the top weed wall of ever encroaching pesky lantana. This level of the orchard is on the same level of our gravity feeding dam tank - so it will never get a drink - (not than anything else does either). It is also a difficult level to get to as there is no wheelbarrow track up to it. It is an effort to get a hay bale up there so this row is very neglected and need to be tough. Not a very happy tree - not thriving, but there is hope for it as it has not died. Planted: 2008 Height 2 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Was this review helpful? Wampee 10/10![]() Update: 5364 days 1hrs Comments: - Only had one harvest so far, looking forward to the next.. Absolutely delicious. Small easily peeled fruit, Juicy as a lychee. Refreshing slightly citrus flavour. Have watered it while it established. No water since. Fed it occasionally with some manure. Plan to prune it so I can continue to reach the fruit. Seems like easy care, easy enjoy.
