My Edible Fruit Trees: Mango Trees wa
Mango - Calypso (Seedling) 8/10![]() Update: 1462 days 18hrs Comments: - This mango is a Calypso seedling I planted in 2012. It has a very small and compact growth habit and is just over a meter tall at 7 years old. I transplanted it into a 130L pot thinking that it was root bound in its original 60L pot only to discover that it had a very small root system and was nowhere near filling its original pot. This probably explains its dwarf growth habit. this is the only mango that currently grows in my yard that doesn%u2019t require any spraying of fungicides to control anthracnose. It seems to have a very high natural resistance to this disease. It has just started flowering in 2019 and has set many fruit. Hopefully they will hang on till maturity and taste at least as good as the original Calypso. Mango - Mahachanok/King Thai (Grafted) 10/10![]() Update: 2179 days 6hrs Comments: - This is the best tasting mango I have ever eaten - either here or overseas etc. It's incredible. A lovely complex flavour that is sweet but has this addictive sub-acid undercurrent to it's flavour profile. I am crazy for them. Little fibre, super flat seed - so very large flesh-seed ratio. If you love mangoes then do yourself a favour and plant this one - you won't regret it. The tree is also a semi dwarf type - which is very handy. Planted: 2014 Height 3 metres Growing: In the Ground First Fruited: 3 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Balanced Acid lovers alternating with slow release organic chook manure pellets. Little and often. Some sulphur in early spring, iron sulphate in winter occasionally. Question: If I remove the early flowers I get a second flush of flowers at a better time later in spring - but these second flower flushes look different - are they just as productive? [1399 days 4hrs ago]On Bowen mango, we usually lose the flowers in Spring due to anthracnose. They turn brown and drop off. Mango - R2E2 (Grafted) 7/10![]() Update: 2179 days 20hrs Comments: - Not very vigorous here. The fruit tastes way better than in the shops though. Thinking of top-working our 3 because they are underperforming, compared to the Mahachanok, for eg. Dwarf Mango - Sensation![]() Update: 4737 days 20hrs Comments: - The sound of this fruit and the idea of a red dwarf mango is rather exciting to me. The plan is to put it in a giant pot (about 0.5 m3) to match the other dwarf mango (which will also be in a giant pot). I've gently rubbed its tip (spring 2010) and it now seems to be preparing to branch (yippee). I've planted strawberries all around the pot to act as a living mulch Alas, no branching ... but LOADS of fruit. In Jan 2012 I've had to remove over a dozen the size of apricots to stop them weighing down the plant. I've added support to stop the remaining fruit from bending the plant to the ground (I intend to thin down to 1-2 fruit, but want to see how they develp first) Home grown mangos are the ultimate! so much flavour packed into a little fruit! Delicious! Height 1 metres Growing: In a Pot Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Pollination: Self Pollination Was this review helpful? Mango - Ono (Grafted)BJ11_old_address's Edible FruitsUpdate: 4737 days 20hrs Comments: - This is supposed to be a very tough form of mango. It is growing in a large pot after my Palmer dwarf finally expired. I've put down strawberries as a living mulch and the mango seems quite happy. It has a few branches but isn't growing at a great rate yet (April 2011) As of June 2011 the plant has put on a spurt and added a further 2 branches. It doesn't seem to want to get any taller - but it does seem healthy! By the end of 2011 it had several flowers and set fruit. In Jan 2012 I thinned this to 3 fruit only. It is still putting on new growth. OMG ... home grown mangos are something else entirely. Anyone that can should grow a mango. These were little fruit 12cm long ... but delicious (and the pips were also small). So yummy. Mango - Bowen Seedling 10/10![]() Update: 4986 days 24hrs Comments: - I decided to go a Bowen mango to add to our other 7 large fruiting mangoes. They go so well here with spectacular fruiting so why not go with a Bowen as well. It is planted on a slight slope on dripper retic. However the other mature trees rely totally on the rainfall or otherwise their roots have tapped into some underground water as I never water them. Mangoes are truly suited to this town with many trees throughout the area all healthy with plenty of fruit. Dwarf Mango - Irwin (Grafted)![]() Update: 5200 days 17hrs Comments: - just planted at 4 ft tall, but feeling good as researched it's yield v high, resistance to disease good, and good for people who want lots of fruit trees as only grows 2-3 m tall. Dug a hole almost 1m cubed, filled with well draining compost and soil, so it should be happy. Mango - Kensington Pride (Grafted) 8/10![]() Update: 5391 days 21hrs Comments: - These are doing ok - they have burnt leaf margins either due to wind or salinity issues. There were pruned at 1m to encourage branching and strong framework. They are a bit slow growing - I think they need more water in summer to push them along. This photo of 2 yr old.
