Grapefruit (Grafted)HomegrownHeddibles1's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5708 days 3hrs Comments: - Ruby Ray variety with pink flesh, suited to coolish climates. Like most citrus trees, it suffers in the cold and wind in Victoria,
but comes good again in the heat of summer and with the aid of
fertilisers and tonics. Seasol and Powerfeed in Spring through to Autumn are important to build up the cell walls so it can better cope with the cold. A dose of Citrus food pellets in February and August, as well as some chelated iron and Epsom Salts (Magnesium sulphate) corrects the winter yellows. Chook poo and human yellow fertiliser (!!) once the leaf colour is back to normal in late spring or early summer makes all the difference. It has tried to fruit a couple of
times at least but the foul stinking heat of the 2008/2009 summer, the
water restrictions and the hot winds forced it to drop all but one of the fruit that
formed. That poor solitary grapefruit is developing nicely now. I can't wait to eat my very own pink grapefruit! Planted: 2007 Height 1 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 First Fruited: 2 Years from purchase in pot Sun/Shade: Full Sun Water Given in: Autumn and Spring Pruned By: 2% in Autumn and Winter Pollination: Self Pollination Fertiliser or Organics Used: Citrus food, chelated iron, chook poo When I Fertilise: Winter Pest Control: No pests affecting it yet, touchwood! Grapefruit - Ruby Red (Grafted)![]() Update: 2404 days 19hrs Comments: - Pretty. Growing moderately fast. A few flowers spring 2017 delivering my first fruit (one) in September 2018 which was quite red inside and tasted very good, although skin was more dark yellow rather than pink. Has a leaf yellowing problem for which I tried using Epsom salts foliar spray. Not sure if it helped (placebo effect...) Fruiting Months September Planted: 2014 Height 2 metres Growing: In the Ground Qty: 1 Sun/Shade: Medium Sun Water Given in: Spring SpringPollination: Self Pollination When I Fertilise: Spring Pest Control: White oil for leaf miner Was this review helpful? Grapefruit - Ruby Red (Seedling) 7/10![]() Update: 4893 days 21hrs Comments: - I bought this from a nursery two years ago in a pot. This year I planted it in the ground with a mixture of dirt, cow manure and compost. It doesn't seem to be doing so well. The Tahitians lime next to it planted at the same with the same mixture seems to be doing fine. It gets plenty of sun. I think be the conifers growing behind in along the fence line in the neighbours back yard could be the reason. Or am over compensating with water because of the conifers. Don't know! Grapefruit - Thompson Pink (Grafted)3's Edible FruitsUpdate: 5002 days 5hrs Comments: - This is a sport of the common Marsh grapefruit variety, differentiated from its parent by its pinkish coloured flesh and seedlessness. Apparently the pink colour only develops under ideal growing conditions and I am not sure that it will receive enough heat in our garden. The taste is similar to Marsh. This tree is part of our citrus hedge - a row of citrus trees planted along a north-west facing boundary fence at 1m spacing. The plan is for the trees to grow into an effective hedge that will be kept pruned to about 2m high. We prepared the planting area for the citrus hedge by incorporating "fruit & veg" soil mix into our existing sandy soil. Mushroom compost was worked into the bottom of the planting hole which was then backfilled with more "fruit and veg" mix. The area was lightly mulched with mushroom compost, leaving the area about 8cm around the trunk clear. I'm sure this is a traditional grapefruit of many years. They don't seem to have affected the tree too badly and the fruit is fine. Nice and Juicy too. Organic Status:Organic Question: If the info about Grapefruit being a good liver cleanser is true, how come no one uses it for that purpose. Apparently there are some concerns if people are taking medications, as there is some conflict in efficacy. Was this review helpful?
