My Edible Fruit Trees: Mango Trees
Mango - Thai seedling 9/10Edward3's Edible FruitsUpdate: 28 days 19hrs Comments: - Grew this tree from seed from a Thai mango bought in Cabramatta. The stem has a copper colour - quite different from our other mango trees. It produced one mango in 2022 which was very tasty. So far this variety seems disease resistant. In 2024 got a large crop of mangoes, all disease free. Mangosteen Purple (Seedling) 9/10![]() Update: 389 days 21hrs Comments: - Five year old seedlings(2 years inground). Protected in winter with green house cover. Purple mangosteens apparently don't like being too close to the sea! I'm 300 meters away and both seem to be responding well and growing just as fast as the achachas. The spot has almost 360 protection from wind. House on one side, shed on the other, fence behind and a raised garden bed infront with shade cloth. Soil is high organic mix, with 20% clay and 10% sand. Mango - Bowen Seedling (Seedling) 8/10![]() Update: 717 days 14hrs Comments: - Very tasty fruit, but fruit set depends very much on the weather being right at flowering time, so some years get very little fruit. In 2017 got a huge crop due to the combination of dry weather at flowering time and good rain after fruit set. But in subsequent years rain caused disease and got very few mangoes. Mango - Calypso (Seedling) 8/10![]() Update: 1461 days 11hrs Comments: - This mango is a Calypso seedling I planted in 2012. It has a very small and compact growth habit and is just over a meter tall at 7 years old. I transplanted it into a 130L pot thinking that it was root bound in its original 60L pot only to discover that it had a very small root system and was nowhere near filling its original pot. This probably explains its dwarf growth habit. this is the only mango that currently grows in my yard that doesn%u2019t require any spraying of fungicides to control anthracnose. It seems to have a very high natural resistance to this disease. It has just started flowering in 2019 and has set many fruit. Hopefully they will hang on till maturity and taste at least as good as the original Calypso.
