Rain in 2012
The country has received yet another deluge of water, for some it is just what is needed to plan the plot and get digging in the garden while for others it is just all together too much. We hope that if you are in the flooded areas that all is well with you. For those who have received excellent rainfall this may be the best planting season we've had for years.
Summer is the season of snakes and we are no stranger to them here at the nursery. But you can imagine our surprise when one decided to slither into the middle of our busy and vibrant dispatch shed heading straight for Renee, she side stepped it only to divert it towards the packed mail order boxes. To our dismay it disappeared into one of the boxes. At this stage we felt lucky that we had seen which box the snake was in, we isolated it and then convinced the little whip snake to stay with us here at the nursery. It was only a few days later when we had another scaly visitor, this time it was a diamond python that spent the day curled up on the Oxford dictionary in the corner of the office.

The Good News: Due to receiving more orders from you our lovely customers and developing quicker ways to get our fruit trees to your door we have now changed this to $4.50 for orders under $50. (Learn More)

Keriberry
The keriberry is a large and vigorous vine that produces copious amount of fruit over an extended period. The vine is an attractive evergreen plant with fine thorns that will require a support to grow over. The flowers are pretty and pink. The fruits are a little bit like a blackberry, they are deep purple, sweet and staining, rich in Vitamin A, C, K, zinc, iron and calcium. They are delicious eaten straight off the vine or used in pies and preserves. Because the fruits are very juicy they can be blended into fresh juices or used in alcoholic beverages such as wine or brandy and they make splendid sweet syrups.

Black Sapote
We have been enjoying our bumper crop if black sapote fruits. Black sapotes are closely related to persimmons and the fruits need to be treated in much the same way as an astringent persimmon. Once picked we put them to one side in a cool dry area and leave them to ripen. This takes about a week depending on the weather. When they fruits are ready to eat they should be very soft - in fact you should be able to make a dent in the fruit when you gently press it. When you cut the fruit it should be a shiny, glossy chocolate colour on the inside, if it is still green do not eat it. Black sapotes trees can produce massive amounts of fruit. Once they have ripened they can be frozen whole, this will allow you to enjoy the fruits over an extended period of time. If you want to add anything extra to your ripe black sapote they are just delicious when whipped with a spoon of ice cream, we don't think they get much better than this but would love to hear your black sapote recipes if you have the time to inspire us.
