Wide Brown Waters
January was all about rain for many of us. Our thoughts go to all of those who have been effected by the serious floods that have swamped so much of the country, we wish you all a speedy recovery and we would like to thank all those who have contacted us asking how we fared. Kyogle has received two minor flood since Christmas and we felt extremely fortunate as we watched the waters rising to the north, south and west of us. As is the nature of our landscape we need to be prepared for too much or not enough water. So what can we do as backyard gardeners to help our plants survive the wet season.
Drainage: Wet Australian Summers
When it comes to growing fruit trees drainage is the key to success, just as we do not like to walk around with water in our boots, trees do not like to stand in water as it reduces the oxygen in the soil and drowns the root system. To encourage a healthy root system and ensure that when the rain sets in your fruit trees will have perfect drainage it is a good idea to mound your planting site, especially in heavy clay soils. As far as planting seasons go this one could be better, the soil is moist and the weather is warm and humid which the plants are loving.
