Sensational Citrus

Dwarf CitrusAs we welcome the cooler season it is the time when the citrus trees come into their own. Anyone visiting my house this year is commenting on my orange which has a huge crop of the most delicious oranges that I have ever grown. Mind you I say this every year as I start to pick my citrus. Not only are they a sensational fruit but the trees are also beautiful Cara Caraornamental plants with large brightly coloured fruits that brighten up the winter orchard. Some citrus are must have for any or every back yard, here are are Daleys Nursery picks. The Dwarf Navelina Orange is our pick of the oranges, this is the one attracting attention in my home orchard at the moment. It is a large early navel with seedless fruits. The Cara Cara Blood Navel is another excellent quality fruit, it has even colour flesh that is a deep orangey red.

LemonsEvery Australian backyard, where the climate permits traditionally has a lemon tree in the corner, the Meyer is an excellent choice for anyone who wants a very juicy fruit that is perfect for sauces and dressings. It also comes as a dwarf making it ideal for pots and patios. Those wishing to make preserves, jams and jellies should select a true lemon such as the Eureka or Lisbon as these selections contain more pectin.

For all those people that enjoy the flavour of a lemon, the lemonade is the perfect tree for you, it has a wonderful lemon flavour but without the sourness. This tree will produce a bumper crop of deliciously sweet lemonade fruits.

There are two outstanding mandarins that have held the test of time, the Emperor and the Imperial. These are both sensation fruits that will produce a bumper crop for you. They are easy to peel and are perfect for lunch boxes.

If anyone is looking for something a little more unusual the Nam Roi Pummelo is a Nam Roistriking fruit. It is enormous and uncommon in that they are not often encountered in Australian supermarkets. In Asia however they are commonly seem at the market where the ready pealed segments can be purchased.
