Tropical Fruit World

At the end of June we took advantage of a quiet winter's afternoon and we all headed up to Tropical Fruit World.  The farm has what could be described and an idyllic climate and position, it is up above the Murwillumbah flats and is therefore a few degrees cooler in the summer and slightly warmer in the winter, as well there are gorgeous views back to the border ranges.  The farm began life back in 1937 as a DPI avocado research station; the history displays itself today with extensive planting of this delicious rich fruit.  It changed hands in 1972 when Bob Brinsmead saw the farm and recognized the potential this valuable piece of land had for growing many different types of tropical and subtropical fruits.  What began for Bob and his family as a personal interest in home grown fruits has grown and flourished into what Tropical Fruit World is today, which I think is best described by Carla as a forest of food or a Garden of Eden. 
We arrived at Tropical Fruit World just on lunch time and were tempted by all their fruit displays and delicious aromas drifting from the cafe, with bags of hot roasted macadamias we headed off for a fruit tasting with Shaun.  Even in the dead of winter there were tropical delights to tempt our taste buds, we tried some delicious crisp jakfruit, pitayas, abiu, pineapple, custard apple, carambola, Davidson plum, persimmon, babaco, lemonade, tangelo & some smooth avocado guacamole flavoured with their scrumptious sweet chilli and tamarillo sauce. Shaun was informative, interesting and funny.
We were very fortunate to have the Operations Manager, Aymon give up his afternoon and act as our tour guide around the farm. As a group we had many highlights from our day out in this forest of food but what struck us the most was the presentation of the farm as a whole.  It was great to see coconuts fruiting this far south and we were all impressed by the glowing golden Ginkgo trees, the beautifully arched branches of the flowering mamey sapotes and the gorgeous bronze leaved star apples were also favourites from the day.

Videos: Fruit Tasting Demonstrations

Fruit Trees like Apples, Plums Almonds, Grapes will lose their leaves in winter and look very bare. When these plants are small Winter is the best time to transport them. Often in spring these plants can be hard to come by as it is when they are bare rooted that they are most easily sold.
