Kiwi Fruit or Chinese Gooseberry (Male)
Actinidia deliciosa (Male)
Deciduous vine. Grown on fence or trellis. This male will not bear fruit but is necessary to cross-pollinate female varieties.
Vigorous deciduous twining vine with male and female flowers on separate plants. Fruit form only on female plants but a male pollinator is required. Plant into free draining, slightly acid sandy loam. Needs full sun but protection from hot, strong winds. Support on trellis, fence or pergola, tying vine to support. Don't twist vine about wires. Use a thick mulch, feed using high nitrogen complete food in Spring and well rotted animal manure in Autumn and keep water supply up.
Plant around 7m apart with 1 male for up to 9 female plants. Fruit is produced on the first 6 buds of the present years growth. Winter prune to remove all wood older than 1 year other than structural branches and short laterals around 40cm apart. Summer prune all water shoots.
